Almost every dog has its own characteristics and health issues. Therefore, responsible owners carefully research the breed before bringing home a puppy. For example, eye loss in dogs is a very common problem. To be prepared for this, it's worth first learning which breeds are prone to eye loss.
Which dog breeds have drooping eyes?
Eye loss shouldn't be taken literally. Your dog's eye won't fall out and roll across the floor. Prolapse means that the eye is protruding too much from its socket, which can lead to a variety of unpleasant consequences for your pet.
Prolapsed eyeballs are common in dogs with shortened skulls and slightly upturned noses. Small breeds are also susceptible to this condition.
Most often, Chihuahuas, Pekingese, Japanese Chin, Bulldogs, Boxers, Bullmastiffs, Shih Tzus, Shar Peis, Pugs, and Boston Terriers are at risk of eyeball prolapse.

The severity of damage to the visual organ is influenced by the individual reaction of the body and the length of time after the damage.
Reasons
The main cause of this type of illness is traumatic or mechanical damage.In theory, this can happen to almost any dog breed, but in practice, this type of injury is more common in dogs with a skull structure where the eyeball is held in place only by the eyelids (and therefore highly mobile).
When the eyeball is displaced, a rupture of the rectus muscles and a retrobulbar hematoma are observed.

Eye trauma causes damage to all parts of the visual apparatus - the membranes, intraocular vessels, lens and vitreous body
This disease is manifested by the following symptoms:
- protrusion of the eyeball;
- bruising and bleeding on the mucous membranes;
- conjunctivitis and swelling.
Changes in the optic nerve are often the cause of blindness.
What to do about it
First of all, you need to know how to help your dog before going to the vet:
- The owner must remain calm. Your pet already understands that things are bad, so there's no need for you to panic and make things worse.
- Calm your pet down and put a protective collar on him to prevent his paws from touching the injury.
- Rinse the wound with water (at a comfortable temperature) and clean it from blood stains.
- Apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling. Keep it near the injured eye for no more than 10 minutes.
- Cover the injury with a clean bandage or gauze soaked in saline. Do not allow the bandage to dry out; keep it moistened constantly.
- Go to the vet immediately
When an eyeball falls out, the critical period is one day. The condition can further develop into serious complications, including retinal detachment and complete vision loss. At the veterinary clinic, your pet will undergo reconstructive surgery, during which the doctor will trim part of the eyelid and return the organ to its proper position in the eye socket.
