My dog is constipated: what to do?

Like people, dogs sometimes get sick and experience various ailments. Sometimes an owner notices their dog is constipated but doesn't know what to do. After all, it's clear the animal is suffering, and this condition is often painful. In such cases, it's important to know what to do, otherwise the consequences can be very serious.

Reasons

Causes of constipation in dogs

If an animal defecates less than 2-3 times every 3 days, this can already be considered a sign of constipation - a retention of feces in the intestines. The reasons for this phenomenon may be the following:

  • improper nutrition with a predominance of low-quality dry food or overly strong broths;
  • frequent feeding of bones;
  • sedentary lifestyle of the animal;
  • intestinal atony and other gastrointestinal diseases;
  • pelvic bone fracture;
  • tumor processes.

A common occurrence and cause of constipation is the presence of worms, so preventative measures against these parasites should be taken regularly.

First aid

Constipation in a dog

The steps here are the same as for a person with a similar illness:

  • You should give your pet a laxative; folk remedies of this kind will also help;
  • You can just give kefir, but fresh;
  • try to provide the dog with plenty of water to drink;
  • A small amount of Vaseline oil often helps well, but castor oil should not be given as it causes pain to the dog;
  • give an enema.

In most cases, an enema is essential, as laxatives will stimulate intestinal peristalsis. Dry feces, when passed, can seriously injure the intestines and cause pain.

The procedure should be done using warm water, soap solution or Vaseline oil; water with a small amount of fish oil added works well. Just keep an eye on the temperature of the liquid: it should be room temperature or slightly warmer.

Consulting a doctor

If, despite your efforts, your pet does not have a natural bowel movement within 2 days, rush to the doctor. Constipation can be a sign of a serious illness. Also, if the enema solution doesn't reach the intestines, you should act immediately. Such a serious obstruction can lead to organ rupture and death.

Any abnormal condition in a dog is a warning sign, and constipation is no exception. Therefore, pay close attention to your dog, take him for walks often, and feed him high-quality food. A healthy pet is a joy for its owner and a clear indicator of your good relationship.
