Dog clothing has always been a controversial topic. While dog owners' experience shows that while it's essential to keep your pets warm during walks, not all dogs require it. There are certain breeds that definitely require winter clothing.
American Hairless Terrier
A well-muscled dog with a long neck and powerful legs, this breed is hairless. Therefore, it's important for owners to monitor their dog's temperature during walks. Before a walk, you can apply mink oil to their body to protect them from the cold. Hypothermia can lead to colds and various infections.
For winter clothing, owners of this breed choose warm mink overalls. Dogs respond well to this fur. If your pet is particularly uncomfortable, you can add a blanket, but you'll have to shorten the walk. Shoes are acceptable if your pet is accustomed to them.
Dachshund
This breed absolutely needs winter overalls, as the dachshund's belly is close to the cold ground. Without clothing, they risk hypothermia, which can lead not only to a cold but also to kidney disease and bladder hypothermia. Choose winter clothing with a back zipper for easier dressing. A fully covered back and belly will prevent your pet from catching a cold.
Taxes are divided into three types:
- Smooth-haired. This type of dog needs clothing at temperatures as low as -10 degrees.
- Wirehaired. A knitted jumpsuit can be worn on a dachshund for temperatures from -10 degrees Celsius; it will provide the necessary ventilation.
- Long-haired. This type of dog only requires additional clothing at temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius.
Shoes are safe to use if you're concerned about your dog being harmed by chemicals sprinkled on winter precipitation. Otherwise, they'll simply interfere with their enjoyment of the walk.
Chinese Hairless Crested Dog
These dogs require clothing in both winter and summer. They are short in stature and have long, thin legs.
Hairless pets need warm clothing to avoid hypothermia. Don't try to toughen up your pet by exposing them to cold weather. Hypothermia can lead to a cold.
Warm clothing isn't necessary; a light jacket is sufficient to allow your pet to move around easily. Avoid unisex clothing, as it's uncomfortable. For boys and girls, it's best to choose gender-specific overalls.
Pug
Pug owners try to take their pugs out into the cold as little as possible. However, pugs need fresh air to thrive.
Dogs' unique anatomy requires a special regimen for walks on cold days. Their airways are too short compared to other breeds, allowing cold air to enter their lungs and cause a cold.
An insulated blanket or jumpsuit is an excellent winter clothing option for pugs. The main requirement is that the neck and chest are well insulated. If the dog's feet are cold, boots can be used. However, training a dog to wear shoes is very difficult.
Pharaoh Hound
This pet is very energetic and requires walks several times a day. The breed has a very thin layer of fat and short fur. In cold weather, the dog quickly becomes chilled, despite its activity. This puts it at risk of catching a cold.
Therefore, owners should think about warm clothing in advance. A fleece jumpsuit is perfect for walking. It's soft, doesn't restrict movement, and is quite warm.
Italian Greyhounds
The Italian Greyhound has thin skin that helps it maintain an optimal body temperature during long runs. In winter, the animal requires additional protection from the cold. Some owners train their dog to use a pad and refuse to let them walk. However, Italian Greyhounds are very energetic and require active play outdoors.
A lightweight winter jumpsuit will protect your pet from the cold outside. A blanket can also be used if your pet doesn't like running in the snow. Shoes are recommended, as it will make it uncomfortable for your pet to move quickly.
Dogo Argentino
The Dogo Argentino has a stern appearance. But it's actually a good-natured dog. It's generally healthy and free of hereditary diseases. However, it does have one drawback: its short coat, which doesn't keep it warm during cold walks.
The owner should provide the pet with a warm jumpsuit and even shoes if the dog tucks its paws in while being walked. Keeping the animal in a cage is out of the question.
Chihuahua
Dogs of this breed are not capable of fighting natural disasters on their own, so humans must take care of this themselves.
Ideally, a dog should have a complete wardrobe for all seasons. In cool weather, smooth-coated Chihuahuas should be dressed in warm knitwear, and in frosty weather, in warm overalls, and care should be taken to ensure they stay warm.
This breed has very delicate paw pads. To protect them from the salt used on winter roads, wear special boots.
Toy Terrier
Dogs with short hair are prone to hypothermia. This is especially dangerous for small breeds, as they require a lot of energy to restore their body temperature.
Winter clothing is essential for a Toy Terrier. Pay attention to your pet's belly; it should be completely covered. A hat will help protect their ears from frostbite, and winter boots will protect their paws from ice or chemicals. Buy clothing made only from natural materials.
Corgi
Corgis are considered domestic dogs, despite their thick undercoat. They reach a height of up to 30 centimeters, so their height and weight make them difficult to cope with temperature fluctuations. Hypothermia can lead to various illnesses.
To protect your dog from winter cold, you can dress them in a fleece-lined winter suit. They don't need anything particularly insulated. If you notice your pet squirming and trying to take off their clothes during a walk, you haven't put them on properly.
