The Russian spaniel differs from the English spaniel even in appearance. But the differences extend beyond appearance, to character, behavioral traits, temperament, and living conditions.
Russian Spaniel
The Russian Hunting Spaniel is a sturdy, medium-sized dog. Its build is harmonious and compact, with a moderately long coat and a thick undercoat. Its paws are strong, with tufts of hair between the toes. Its ears are drooping, with the tips reaching to the tip of the nose and set moderately low. Its coloring can vary, but shades of red and brown, as well as black and white in various combinations, are prevalent. Its tail is usually docked halfway to reduce the risk of injury while hunting.
The fur of this breed has virtually no odor.
The dogs have a friendly character; they are active but not aggressive. They are well trained and used for hunting water and forest game.
English Cocker Spaniel
The English Cocker Spaniel is not as large as the Russian variety, but has an impressive appearance thanks to its long, thick coat. The shiny coat covers its body, forming a beautiful ruff and "breeches" on its legs, as well as a "skirt" on its lower body.
The Cocker Spaniel's ears are very long, flared downwards into a teardrop shape. They are set low, at eye level. Poor coat quality is considered a disqualifying fault. The dog's build is strong, with a level back and strong legs. The animal should not be bony or fat. The tail is docked at three days of age.
According to one version, the ancestor of this breed was the legendary lop-eared bird dog, brought to Britain by the troops of Julius Caesar.
Cockers have an active, cheerful, and very sociable character. The dog is friendly with children and does not conflict with other animals. The breed requires good exercise and long walks; it is an excellent companion and friend for the whole family.
Who is better to have?
Russian Spaniels are often purchased by hunters planning to hunt woodcock and waterfowl. These dogs are less demanding in terms of living conditions, are unpretentious, and hardy. However, English Spaniels are also quite well-suited to hunting: with proper training, they can even be used to hunt wild boar. And when it comes to hunting ducks, woodcock, and other small game, they are on par with other breeds.
The English Cocker Spaniel is a very beautiful dog. However, its long coat requires regular grooming: washing, brushing, clipping, and trimming. To keep the dog looking presentable, owners will need to master the art of grooming or take their pet to a salon regularly, which can be expensive.
Those who want to participate in international exhibitions should bet on the English Spaniel. The Russian is not recognized by the International Cynological Association and will not be able to participate in competitions. English Cocker puppies are more expensive and easier to acquire, as breeders are more likely to specialize in this breed.
The compact English Spaniel is more suitable for living in a city apartment. Homeowners should choose the Russian Spaniel, which can live indoors or in an aviary, serving as a hunter, companion, and guard dog.
Spaniels are sociable, friendly, and active dogs that get along well with children and other pets. These pets are generally healthy, long-lived, easily trained, and undemanding in their living conditions.
