How to weigh a cat without stressing your pet

If your pet is sick, you need to monitor their weight. This can be done at any veterinary clinic, but not all pets tolerate travel well, and this can worsen their condition. Furthermore, not all clinics offer this procedure free of charge.

Weighing a cat

How can I weigh a cat?

The tool for this will be nothing other than a scale. Scales come in:

  • Kitchen.
  • Lever.
  • Floor-standing.

Both mechanical and electronic scales are suitable. When it comes to measuring an animal's weight, electronic scales are more accurate.

Ways to weigh your pet

To measure your cat's weight using floor scales, you need:

  • measure your body weight;
  • pick up your pet and step on the scale;
  • subtract your body weight from the total;
  • The result is ready (BUT! For accuracy, it is worth repeating 2-3 times).

The presence of the owner nearby reduces the risk of stress in the animal.

If your pet has a favorite box or basket for sleeping and resting, it can also be used for safely weighing them. Here's what you'll need:

  • first place the basket on the scales and remember its weight;
  • wait until the cat decides to rest there or put her there yourself;
  • calm the pet, for example, by petting it;
  • Subtract the weight of the basket from the total weight.

If you have a scale with weights, a cherished sleeping basket or mat will also work. The algorithm is simple:

  • we put the basket on the scales;
  • we place a counterweight on the other side;
  • we lay the cat down and also place weights up to the balance mark;
  • the cat is free, then we add up the weight of all the loads, except for those that were placed for the basket.

Please note that this procedure takes longer and is therefore more stressful for your pet. Remain calm and avoid any sudden movements to avoid frightening your pet.

Everyone knows that cats love to play with bags. If you have a canter, this is a big advantage.

What you need to do:

  • lure your favorite animal into the bag (move it or put food in it)
  • attach the handles to the hook
  • carefully, so as not to frighten the animal, lift the bag 5-10 cm from the floor
  • record the result

The kitchen scale method is suitable for measuring the weight of kittens or small cats, as home kitchen scales are not designed for measuring larger weights.

These scales often have a food bowl. To make your pet feel comfortable, you can line the bowl with your cat's favorite rug or other familiar item. Here's what to do next:

  • place a pet in a bowl
  • caress
  • record the result

How to properly weigh a cat

  • It is better to carry out the procedure in the morning before eating, but after using the toilet.
  • Stay close to your pet, reassure them, and don't force the procedure. This will help reduce stress for your pet.
  • If your pet is healthy, you should weigh it 2-3 times a month; if it is sick, you should weigh it more often.
