Novomek is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug. It was developed for farm animals but is also used to treat cats and dogs. It is effective against ticks, worms, lice, and other parasites. This medication should not be used without a doctor's prescription due to a number of contraindications and side effects. Before using Novomek, it is recommended to read the instructions for veterinary use.
Composition and release form
Novomek is produced by Vetbiokhim, a Moscow-based joint-stock company specializing in veterinary drugs. It is a colorless, transparent injection solution. The liquid sometimes has a yellowish tint. The medication is available in various packaging sizes:
- polyethylene bottles of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 250 ml;
- glass bottles of 450 and 500 ml;
- ampoules of 1, 2 and 5 ml (packed in blisters or packs of 1.5 and 10 pieces).
The main active ingredient in this product is ivermectin, a medicinal antiparasitic substance. When it enters an animal's body, it paralyzes the parasites, leading to their death.
The auxiliary components in the drug are isopropyl alcohol and triethylene glycol.
Prescription of the drug
Novomek is used by veterinarians to treat most farm animals:
- cows;
- deer;
- horses;
- pigs;
- goats;
- sheep.
Since the drug is considered quite safe and effective, it is often prescribed to pets (cats, dogs). However, in this case, the dosage is significantly lower.
Novomek is used to combat the following parasites:
- nematodes and their larvae;
- lice;
- lice;
- flies;
- worms (not used to kill tapeworms);
- acariform mites;
- various types of gadfly larvae.
Veterinarians also prescribe this antiparasitic drug when a disease caused by parasites is detected in a pet. These diseases include:
- nematodosis;
- acarosis;
- sarcoptosis;
- psoroptosis;
- demodicosis;
- trichuriasis.
Contraindications
Novomek is contraindicated:
- animals during lactation;
- females in the last 4 weeks of gestation;
- weakened pets;
- cubs under 2 months of age;
- pets suffering from infectious diseases.
Injections should not be given to animals undergoing treatment with drugs belonging to the group of macrocyclic lactones.
Some purebred pets, such as collies and bobtails, are more sensitive to this drug. Uncontrolled use can cause death in pets. Therefore, treatment should be carried out under strict veterinary supervision.
Instructions for use
According to the instructions for use of Novomek, the drug is administered subcutaneously. As a rule, the standard treatment regimen consists of only 1 injection, but in advanced cases a repeat injection is required after a certain period of time.
It's crucial to calculate the correct dosage, as overdosing can lead to poisoning. This is especially dangerous for pets. For this reason, it's strongly recommended to seek veterinary advice.
If a repeat administration of the drug is necessary and the pet owner is unable to visit a veterinarian, the procedure can be performed at home. Before beginning the procedure, it is recommended to wear gloves and use a sterile syringe. Follow the instructions below:
- Draw the required dose of the drug into the prepared syringe.
- Secure your four-legged pet.
- Pull the skin at the withers (between the shoulder blades and the back of the head).
- Insert the needle to a depth of 1 cm.
- Pour in all the liquid gradually.
- Remove the needle and calm the animal.
Once opened, the liquid should be used within 40 days. After this period, use is strictly prohibited.
Possible side effects
Side effects from Novomek in animals are observed with drug overdose. The most common symptoms are:
- general malaise;
- vomiting;
- tremor;
- profuse salivation.
There is no specific treatment for the symptoms of an overdose of this drug. Therefore, if any of the above symptoms are detected, it is recommended to immediately take your animal to a veterinary clinic.
In rare cases, intoxication may occur if the dosage is incorrectly calculated. In this situation, diuretics, significant fluid intake, and other medications that help normalize the pet's water and intestinal alkalinity balance will be required. Since the owner will not be able to provide assistance at home, it is recommended to administer the injection at a veterinary clinic and keep the animal under specialist observation for some time afterward.
When the recommended dosage is followed, side effects are generally not observed. However, your pet is not immune to allergic reactions. If symptoms appear (itching, redness), take your pet to see a veterinarian.
Novomek is an effective antiparasitic medication. Its main advantage is that it provides long-term protection for pets. Furthermore, a single injection is usually sufficient to achieve the desired result. However, since it is difficult to independently determine the correct dosage for your pet, it is recommended that Novomek be administered at a veterinary clinic to avoid any potential side effects.
