The owl is a bird that dwells in the depths of the forest. A sudden encounter with one will surprise anyone. Since ancient times, many superstitions have been associated with the owl. We'll explain them in more detail so you know what the appearance of this nocturnal wanderer can mean.
Bad omen or good one
Living creatures that are awake at night and sleep during the day were viewed by our ancestors as the devil's accomplices. Since ancient times, there has been a belief that an encounter with a nocturnal forest dweller foretells trouble.
Birds of prey avoid cities, so their appearance near humans is a bad omen. There are exceptions to these bad beliefs.
- Seeing an owl sitting quietly in a tree near your home and hooting is a good omen. It symbolizes a quick addition to the family. It also foretells profit and wealth.
- If an owl flies into the newlyweds' house, they will have a long and harmonious life together.
- When an owl flies into a sick person's home, they will soon recover. When the bird flies away, it takes the illness with it.
According to superstitions, the arrival of an owl in the home portends misfortune: serious illness or death of a household member. This can be avoided if you manage to carefully catch and release the bird without harming it. However, even then, the owl will inevitably take some of your well-being with it. If the bird dies for some reason, bad things are inevitable.
A bird circling over a house for a long time and hooting is a harbinger of death. A predator associated with evil spirits warns residents that a dead person will be in the house. According to superstition, one should look at the circling bird. This will protect the witness from a tragic fate, but not their loved ones.
If you spot an owl on the ridge of a roof, observe its behavior:
- the bird sits silently and motionless - a symbol of prolonged lack of money and lingering problems;
- a screeching owl is a signal of possible cataclysms or fire;
- A jumping predator foretells the healing of the house's inhabitants from illnesses.
There's a high chance of encountering a predator in the forest. Owls usually sleep during the day, so pay attention to the bird's behavior:
- a screaming, restless bird promises financial problems;
- an owl suddenly flying up from the grass or bushes is a sign that promises trouble and illness;
- A bird crossed your path, flying to the right. This symbolizes the need to listen to your intuition. The bird shows that to solve problems, you need to turn to your own insight and natural instincts.
Why do you hear an owl hoot at night?
According to many beliefs, an owl's hoot at night brings misfortune. If an owl hoots near a house, a tragedy will soon befall it—a death. A nighttime hoot warns of danger, even when everyone in the family is healthy and happy. Death may pass the house by, but someone within will become seriously ill. A more benign omen is that a nighttime hoot foretells a sharp cold snap, or, in the spring, a flood.
Why do you see an owl in a dream?
- In Loff's dream book, an owl symbolizes wisdom and longevity. A dreamed bird symbolizes the acquisition of new knowledge.
- Miller's Dream Book believes that dreaming of an owl is a bad sign. Anyone who hears the bird's muffled cry in a dream will face trouble. You should be attentive to your health and the well-being of your loved ones. Such a dream foretells bad news and slander.
- Nostradamus's dream book says that such a dream foretells bad news and troubles. If you kill an owl in a dream, you will be able to free yourself from the influence of a bad person.
If you see an owl, don't be upset or panic. Don't give in to superstition, but rather treat this encounter as a warning. Be cautious and prudent, and misfortunes will pass you by.
