A family of wild boars was caught on camera traps at a nature reserve in the Samara region.
This is very important news for the Zhiguli Nature Reserve, as this is the first time wild boar cubs have been captured on camera traps. Thanks to this information, reserve staff now know about the first wild boar family in the area and can more accurately track their population.
The footage itself shows a family of wild boars approaching a large, mud-rich puddle and thoroughly wiping themselves down. This procedure not only helps the wild boars escape the heat and parasites, but also protects other animals. The reserve's territory is quite arid due to its unique soil, which prevents rainwater from remaining on its surface. This means the animals don't have enough water. The wild boars, however, find such muddy spots and dig them up, extracting water and opening up new sources for the rest of the forest's inhabitants.
