Ultrasonic tick repeller for humans and dogs: operating principle and review of popular models

The Ixodid tick is one of the most ruthless parasites. It stalks its victims during the warmer months. As a carrier of severe infectious diseases, it compels humans to seek new, effective methods of control, one of which is an ultrasonic tick repellent.

Tick repellents and other means of combating ticks

Traditional tick repellents include sprays, gels, and creams; for dogs, additional tick repellents include drops applied to the withers and special tablets. All of these drugs have a significant drawback: they have a chemical composition that is not always safe for humans and animals. Frequent use of chemicals is especially dangerous for children, as they are more susceptible to allergic reactions.

Ticks on the skin

Ticks are dangerous carriers of various diseases.

Safe ultrasonic insect repellents for various types have recently become available. Manufacturers haven't overlooked ticks either. The battery-powered device simply needs to be turned on at the right moment, and it immediately begins working.

The operating principle of the repeller

The device operates at a specific sound frequency, chosen in such a way that humans and animals cannot distinguish it.

Our ears don't react to the repeller, but insects are sensitive to ultrasound and stop attacking their victims.

Tick reaction

Ticks have no sense of sight or smell. The insect's forelimbs have hairs that detect the approach of a warm-blooded target—a human or animal. The tick climbs onto its victim and begins searching for the most tender areas of skin to burrow into. Selecting a location can take up to three days. The armpits, groin, back of the head, and neck are the most vulnerable areas on the human body. Ticks can bite animals on the neck, around the ears, or under the tail.

Ultrasound acts as an irritant to the sensitive hairs on the tick's legs. As a result, he loses the ability to recognize prey, does not try to attack, and tries to leave the territory that is unpleasant for him.

Safety and convenience of the device

The repellent operates continuously, with a range of one to three meters, depending on the brand. Sometimes, disoriented ticks will climb onto a person or animal, but they don't try to bite. Simply shake them off.

It's more effective to use combined tick control methods in case you have to leave the device's effective range. Creams and sprays will provide additional insect repellency.

Before insects, everyone is equal. A tick doesn't care who it bites: a dog, a cat, an adult, or a child. Several improved models of tick repellents have been created. A device designed for small children is tailored to their specific behavior—it's small and won't interfere with their movements.

The device is small in size and fits in the palm of your hand. It can be attached to a dog's collar, a child's stroller, a belt, or simply put in a pocket.

Characteristics of modern models of repellers

These devices have only recently appeared in Russia, and their popularity is only just beginning to gain momentum compared to insecticides. There are several models with a proven track record.

Tickless Repeller

One of the most famous brands of repellers is Tickless. The device was invented in Italy and sold in Russia under the American brand Innotek. Subsequently, production was moved to China, quality plummeted, and Russian companies stopped working with Tickless suppliers. Recently, the Italian company that founded it has resumed production and improvement of its brand. A new modification has already gone on sale in Russia. The latest improved model weighs only 20 g.

Tickless Repeller

The Tickless repeller is reliable to use

The device, with its moisture-resistant, shock-resistant housing, is very compact, yet has a range of up to 3 meters. This distinguishes it from similar devices, whose ultrasonic coverage area is typically only 1 meter. The device is powered by a built-in non-replaceable battery, which has a service life of 10 to 12 months. There is no need to spend any money on additional components; you just need to turn on the device by removing the tab.

Tickless Baby for children

The same brand's line also includes a children's version, Tickless Baby, which will reliably protect children over 3 years old. This age limit is in place for the same reason that it's not recommended to buy toys with small parts for children under 3, as they tend to put everything in their mouths.

A lithium battery will power the device throughout the spring and summer, with a service life of approximately 10–12 months. Smoothly changing ultrasound frequencies affect not only the tick, but also other types of blood-sucking insects: fleas, mosquitoes.

Tickless BABY Repeller

The Tickless Baby children's tick repellent resembles a keychain with a steel ring that attaches to clothing. It's compact and won't interfere with your child's play.

The tick won't be able to get closer than 1.5 meters to the baby. The waterproof and durable housing will protect the device from moisture and damage.

If your dog likes to swim, it's best to remove the device before going to the river. It's water-resistant, but not waterproof. It also runs on a built-in battery, which lasts a maximum of one year. It's shaped like a keychain and can be attached to a dog's collar with a metal clip.

Domestic tick repellent UOK Mega-S

Developed by a Russian manufacturer, the device has proven superior to foreign counterparts in a number of respects. The Moscow State Veterinary Academy conducted field trials on insects common in our country. The device's performance on animals demonstrated its quality and reliability.

The Mega-S ultrasonic tick repeller weighs just over 35 g. The presence of a removable lithium battery allows you to use it not just for one season, but for much longer. The range is short, just 1 meter. This range is a bit tight for consumers, but the device is cheaper than those from foreign manufacturers.

The Russian-made Mega-S repeller has a range of 1 meter.

The device's waterproof housing is made of impact-resistant plastic. The UOK Mega-S can protect against tick bites for both humans and animals. When turned on, the device emits a sound signal. The battery life is 3-4 months. When not in use, the device can be turned off.

Anti-tick M repeller

Anti-tick M is more versatile than similar devices because, according to the manufacturer, it repels not only ticks, but also mosquitoes, fleas, and bedbugs.

Anti-tick M

The Antikleshch M ultrasonic repeller is configured depending on which parasites need to be repelled.

After switching on, a light signal is emitted and then the desired range of exposure is manually adjusted using the MODE button. After turning off the device, the settings are reset, and the device must be configured again when it's turned on again. The Anti-Tick M is reusable—the battery is replaced as needed. The operating range reaches 4 m, which is significantly higher than that of competitors.

The durable plastic case is waterproof. The Anti-Kleshch M is compact, no larger than a flash drive.

Anti-tick M and flash drive

The Antikleshch M repeller is about the size of a flash drive.

The weight with packaging is 110 g. The set includes a strap that can be worn as a bracelet on the wrist or attached to the dog's collar.

The device is universal and can be used by both children and adults. It also helps pets.

Choosing the right repeller

The most convenient device is one with removable batteries, which means a long service life. Furthermore, the greater the range of the repeller, the more reliable the protection. This type of device is ideal for a mobile child who doesn't sit still.

The modern ultrasonic tick repellent does not contain toxic substances and is completely harmless. This has been proven by many years of use.

The device is safe even for infants, pregnant women, as well as puppies and kittens.

Consumer reviews

Ultrasonic repellents aren't yet very popular in Russia. Most consumers distrust them, and some are put off by the high price.

I'm writing back - CRAP! It does squeak, but apparently our ticks were deaf or hard of hearing.

Dogs have excellent hearing, unlike us. How would a dog react to this repellent? Besides, all the repellents I've ever had (and I've bought quite a few—mosquito, fly, mole, and mouse repellents) somehow didn't work.

I've been using these exact keychains for over 10 years; the company where I work imports and sells them. They're truly effective. A tick that lands on a dog doesn't immediately attach itself, but crawls around, searching for a suitable vessel to pierce and attach itself to. It does so using its sensitive antennae. The tick's speaker emits an ultrasonic frequency that resonates with the vibrations of these antennae, effectively paralyzing them—the tick can't sense where to attach itself. Furthermore, the ultrasound creates an unpleasant sensation for the tick.

After a short period of useless crawling on the dog, it quickly jumps off. People use them a lot. Usually, those who buy one come back the following season to buy more, teaming up and buying 10-20 at a time for the entire walking group. From my experience last year, I can give you some statistics: During the entire tick season, 8 dogs—a husky, 2 shepherds, and 5 Yorkies—were kept outside in the countryside, practically all the time. The forest is nearby, surrounding the entire village. We biked through the forest with the shepherds almost every day, swam in the pond, and followed the tracks in the fields. Over the entire season, I removed 3 ticks from all the dogs combined: 1 from the shepherd and 2 from the Yorkies. I additionally treated the shepherds and huskies with drops, but not the Yorkies. The device is truly disposable—the battery is activated, and the device lasts for about a year, then the battery dies. Technically, replacement is not provided, but our craftsmen have learned how to change them.

You can also bring a dead key fob (or one that's broken, chewed, etc.) to our company's service center and exchange it for a new one with an additional payment of 50% of the new one's cost—a bonus from the manufacturer.

We used it for one season, spring 2014. Before that, we'd remove ticks from ourselves and our dogs in the same spot after every walk. After we bought the UOK and now wear a regular flea collar, we've forgotten what ticks are. Before that, we wore the collar but removed ticks regularly. We'll see what happens next spring.

An ultrasonic tick repellent is a safe, modern way to protect against these annoying and dangerous insects that plague us from April to October. Most importantly, with this repellent, our children can safely walk and play in parks and squares, frolicking in the grass. It also protects our pets, who also love to play outdoors.
