While strolling in the park, people sometimes toss scraps of food for the birds. Most often, these are sunflower seeds and baked goods. It's almost tempting to give the birds a little treat. But it turns out there's nothing good about this habit.
Bread is harmful to pigeons
Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't feed your birds bread crumbs or other baked goods. This isn't a complete diet for them and can cause poisoning. Suitable foods include millet, oats, barley, seeds (but not roasted), nuts, and wheat. You can also feed them a special formula, as recommended by ornithologists. However, it's unlikely anyone would want to bother with a trip to the pet store to buy special bird food. In fact, most people don't even consider it.
The bird loses its instinct for independent survival.
Like any living creature, pigeons become accustomed to certain behaviors. After feeding the birds a few times, they begin to systematically flock to the spot where they've become accustomed to obtaining food. Eventually, they stop searching for food on their own. A person should ask themselves: are they ready to assume responsibility for these birds?
Pigeons are carriers of infections
Pigeons are known to be among the most unclean birds. They often suffer from infectious diseases, although the individual who attempted to eat from a human hand did not appear ill. Ornithologists advise staying away from areas where large numbers of pigeons congregate. Sudden onset of acute respiratory infections, influenza, chlamydia, and problems with the nervous system and spleen are all potential consequences of close contact between these birds and humans.
Why is feeding pigeons prohibited in some towns?
Some city authorities impose fines on those who feed birds without permission. This kind act can result in a hefty fine. Furthermore, food scattered on the sidewalk attracts rats and other rodents. Bird droppings are also one reason for such bans.
Therefore, feeding pigeons outside is unsafe. You can easily contract an infectious disease or cause displeasure among others. If you're tempted to share something tasty with the birds, it's worth at least doing it properly: no bread, only grain.
