Lice and nits in the hair are an unpleasant and fairly common problem, especially in children. Nowadays, head lice can be treated quickly, easily, and safely. We offer a variety of products based on a variety of ingredients, including tar soap.
Features of tar soap
Birch tar is known to have been used by the Slavs for many centuries. Initially, it was used for household purposes—lubricating wheel axles and armor, and polishing shoes. Later, its healing properties were discovered, and it was used to combat worms, treat wounds, and heal inflammation. Today, tar soap is widely used for cosmetic purposes. Psoriasis, lichen, itching, smallpox, dandruff, eczema - these are not all the skin diseases that can be cured with tar.
Composition and properties of tar soap
Tar soap is a natural skin care product. It can be found on store shelves not only among other soaps but also among cosmetics.
The soap contains:
- birch tar, consisting of cresols, phytoncides, toluene, resinous substances and organic acids;
- soap base made from sodium salts of animal and vegetable fats, water and thickeners.
Tar has a large number of useful properties:
- disinfectant;
- regenerating;
- drying;
- anesthetic;
- lightening;
- increasing blood flow to tissues;
- absorbent;
- antipruritic.
Tar soap does not contain artificial dyes or fragrances. Moreover, it is one of the most inexpensive cosmetic products.
The effect of tar soap against lice and nits
Tar soap is a popular remedy for removing lice and nits. Tar penetrates the insects' skin, thereby killing them. The soap has many beneficial properties:
- Tar has an extremely unpleasant smell for insects, which can repel them even after treatment;
- benzene in soap can kill the nerve centers of nits;
- Phenol (a component of tar), when it comes into contact with the body of insects, causes serious damage and burns;
- After bites, it is important to restore the skin's water balance, which tar does an excellent job of;
- anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects will also help eliminate the consequences of bites;
- Tar helps to cope with pain.
Tar not only kills insects, but also heals wounds and restores the human scalp.
Treatment methods
If you decide to combat lice with tar soap, prepare all the necessary tools and your bathroom. Treatment methods for lice include using bar and liquid soap, as well as shampoo with added tar.
Treatment with tar soap
Treatment for pediculosis is performed at home. The procedure is divided into several stages:
- Prepare the tools (tar soap in liquid or solid form, comb, sheet for combing, towel).
- Wash your hair with soap and rinse thoroughly. This step degreases your hair and scalp.
- Apply tar soap to your hair and lather generously.
- Leave your hair soaped for at least 15 minutes, but no more than 40. During this time, the insects will weaken and die.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly with running water.
- Comb through strands of hair with a special comb. The fine teeth will remove dead insects.
- After the entire procedure, dry your hair and comb it again.
Treatment with tar shampoo
When treating pediculosis, you can use not only soap, but also shampoo with added tar. It is easier to lather and requires significantly less time to keep on the head.
Tar shampoo can be purchased at any pharmacy or beauty supply store. The most common brands are:
- tar shampoo 911;
- Finnish tar shampoo;
- Tar shampoo from Grandma Agafia;
- tar shampoo Tana;
- tar shampoo Nevskaya Cosmetics;
- Mirrolla shampoo.
You can also make your own tar shampoo. To do this, take regular baby soap, crush it into crumbs, and place it in a double boiler. Once the soap has melted, gradually add birch tar (available at the pharmacy). Then pour in two tablespoons of red wine. After the mixture has cooled, let it steep in a dark place for two days. This shampoo is used in the same way as store-bought shampoo.
Course of treatment
The course of treatment for pediculosis with tar soap lasts about a week. The main sign of success is the absence of dead parasites when combing. If you still find insects, you should continue the treatment or resort to other specialized products.
Basic rules of treatment:
- the use of tar soap should be frequent, daily;
- the session should last at least half an hour;
- You should buy special combs at a pharmacy, as they are treated with medicinal products;
- After each procedure, it is necessary to disinfect the combs;
- you need to carefully comb every strand of hair;
- You cannot rinse your hair with regular shampoo after the procedure.
Tar soap is completely natural. Unlike other specialized drugs, it is non-toxic and suitable for treating pediculosis in children. But if the child has very delicate and dry skin, it is better to use shampoo rather than solid soap.
Contraindications and side effects
The use of tar soap has some limitations:
- Tar soap has a drying effect. Therefore, people with dry and sensitive skin should use it with caution. To prevent dry skin, it's best to use tar soap no more than once a day and apply a nourishing cream afterward.
- Tar has a pungent odor that some people may not tolerate. If you experience nausea, it's best to avoid using this soap. People with allergies to the main ingredient should also exercise caution.
- Tar soap should not be used on open wounds or sores on the skin. It should also not be used by people with chronic kidney disease.
- Tar soap can be harmful if used excessively or if the course of treatment is prolonged.
Despite possible side effects, the benefits and effectiveness of using tar soap are much higher. It is recommended for both pregnant women and children.
