The ideal dog is calm and friendly, doesn't require intensive training or long walks, is easy to care for, and gets along well with children and other animals. It sounds too perfect, but such pets really do exist. Meet the American Cocker Spaniel—one of the most low-maintenance dog breeds.
The Cocker Spaniel is the most unpretentious breed.
Cocker Spaniels have a striking appearance: their expressive eyes, long, drooping ears and constantly wagging tail can charm anyone. They are the smallest of the hunting breeds - their height usually does not exceed 40 cm, and their weight varies from 10 to 15 kg. This breed comes in a variety of colors, including red, black, red, gray, black and piebald, and other colors. The average lifespan of these dogs is 13–16 years.
The ancestors of modern American Cockers are English Cocker Spaniels, which descend from similarly described long-eared hunting dogs of hot Spain.

American spaniels differ from English ones in that they have thicker, longer and silkier hair, larger eyes, and a bright transition from the forehead to the muzzle.
Dog character
Dogs of this breed are incredibly playful and curious. They are always full of enthusiasm and ready to instantly join in any game, constantly on the move, and will approach a visiting guest with equal interest as an unfamiliar object on the street. They are sociable during walks, get along easily with other animals and adore children. They never seem to be sad and infect others with their positive attitude.
The American Water Spaniel requires daily interaction with its owner, so this dog is unlikely to be suitable for a person who does not have a single extra minute between work chores.
Thanks to their intelligence and excellent hunting skills, dogs of this breed are often used by the police and customs.
Pet care
Cocker Spaniels are considered the ideal breed for beginners. These dogs are undemanding in terms of care: they are very clean, practically do not shed, and only need to be bathed, cut and combed from time to time. They are easily trained, intelligent, obedient, and quick to communicate. They are suitable for both homeowners and apartment owners.
Almost all American Cockers love swimming in open water (after salt water, the dog should be bathed at home or at least rinsed with clean running water).
Cocker Spaniels are not picky eaters: they can be fed not only commercial food but also homemade meals. However, avoid overindulging them in fatty foods to avoid health problems.

The long ears of American Cockers are often tied back during mealtimes to prevent contamination from food.
