What to feed a German Shepherd

German Shepherds are intelligent, clean, and easy to train. They're not particularly difficult to care for. However, feeding them can be challenging. The nutritional status and overall physical development of a German Shepherd and its puppies can depend on what you feed them.

What to feed an adult dog

Some dog trainers prefer natural food, while others believe dry food is more complete. In principle, this choice doesn't matter much, but one characteristic specific to the German Shepherd should be taken into account.

This breed is prone to allergies, especially when fed a natural diet. If this occurs, switch to dry food or eliminate the offending food.

The main nutritional characteristics of an adult shepherd are as follows:

  • the feed must contain 3 components of equal quantity: meat products, cereals, vegetables;
  • You can and should add milk, but if it causes diarrhea, then avoid this product;
  • Overeating in representatives of this breed often leads to volvulus, especially if you feed your pet before an active walk;
  • The best meat products are beef, chicken and turkey;
  • pork should only be lean, fish should be low-fat seafood;
  • of cereals, buckwheat and rice are preferable;
  • cottage cheese is a must;
  • Fruits and vegetables should be local, exotic ones often cause allergies.

When it comes to dry food, you should choose super-premium and premium products.

What to feed puppies

A German Shepherd puppy eats from a bowl in the arms of its owner.

Starting at two months of age, babies are gradually transitioned from a milk-based diet to a balanced one. It's best to grind grains, and chop meat, cottage cheese, and eggs. It is important to ensure that the puppy does not gain weight too quickly.Its weight should not exceed 60% of an adult dog's body weight. Fruits, vegetables, and cottage cheese are essential. Meat can be fed raw, but it must be scalded with boiling water before feeding.

A small pet's diet shouldn't contain too much calcium. In shepherds, this can lead to developmental problems.

What foods are prohibited for German Shepherds?

The dog owner must know this list thoroughly:

  • tubular bones are prohibited;
  • semolina, millet, and corn grits should not be introduced into the diet;
  • It is forbidden to feed the dog sausages and hot dogs;
  • You can't give sweets.

When feeding your dog at any age, monitor its reaction to the food. If lethargy, bloating, or diarrhea occur, immediately eliminate any questionable ingredients, even if they are recommended by specialists.

      Briefly and well written. Everything is to the point. German Shepherds are my love and my sorrow. It's so hard when they leave for the land of eternal, happy hunting.
