What is the difference between British and Scottish cats?

Many cat breeds share similarities, such as the British Shorthair and the Scottish Fold. This is because the Scottish Fold was developed from the British breed. Cross-breeding is currently strictly prohibited, as it often results in kittens with various abnormalities. Some owners of popular breeds mistakenly sell or give away "British Fold" kittens. However, such a breed does not exist! Only Scottish Folds have folded ears. To be sure which breed you're looking at, you need to know the differences between British and Scottish Fold cats; it's not just the shape of their ears.

What is the difference between British and Scottish cats in appearance?

British shorthair cat

British Shorthair cats are long-lived, typically living up to 20 years.

Representatives of the British and Scottish breeds can be distinguished by many external characteristics:

  • Size. The "British" are a little larger than the "Scots", their body is more heavy-set and stocky.
  • Head. British cats have a round skull, a slightly flattened nose, pronounced flews and dimples near the bridge of the nose, unlike the Scottish Fold.
  • Ears. Representatives of the Scottish breed can be of two types - Scottish Fold (folded ears) and Scottish Straight (straight ears), and the "British" always have pointed ears.
  • Tail. Scottish cats have a longer and thinner tail.
  • Paws. The British breed has massive and short hair, while the British breed has thinner and longer hair.
  • Color. British Shorthairs come in a variety of colors—blue, van, black, white, and tortoiseshell. They share the same coloring as Scottish Fold cats, but the latter can also be bicolor.

British cats, according to legend, are descendants of the Cheshire cat.

Differences in character

Scottish cat

The Scottish cat has an unusual voice, different from the usual purr, a little squeaky

Representatives of the British breed are true aristocrats, preferring solitude and reluctant to play. However, they enjoy being petted and carried. Scottish Fold cats, on the other hand, can happily participate in any activity. Both breeds are known for their friendly nature, but Scottish Fold cats can even live in the same home with a dog. Dogs are also known for their tendency to stand on their hind legs.

The reason for the unusual appearance of Scottish cats is a gene mutation.

Which breed is better to choose?

British and Scottish cats

The British cat (pictured left) was officially recognized at the end of the 19th century, the Scottish breed (on the right) was bred not so long ago

For quiet and often very busy people, aristocratic "British" cats will become best friends, as they don't require much attention. And Scottish Fold cats will befriend children and will chase a bow all day long.

Representatives of the two breeds—Scottish and British—undeniably have much in common. However, upon closer examination, differences between them can also be found.
