Previcox for dogs is a French tablet medication with antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. This medication has many advantages: it doesn't irritate the stomach, starts working within 15 minutes, and is suitable for frequent use. However, it also has some contraindications and can cause adverse reactions if the instructions are not followed.
Composition and release form
Previcox for dogs is available as brown, round tablets for oral administration. The tablet is scored in the center to allow for splitting if necessary.
The drug is available in two forms, which differ in the quantitative content of the active substance firocoxib:
- 57 mg (for small breeds);
- 227 mg (for large dogs).
The active ingredient reduces pain within 15–20 minutes of administration. The analgesic effect lasts for 24 hours. At the same time, it acts on the source of inflammation and does not affect the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and the stomach wall.
In addition to the main substance, the drug includes a number of auxiliary components:
- lactose monohydrate (gives a sweet taste);
- microcrystalline cellulose (binder);
- aromatic substances "ChartcrHickory smoke flavor" (smoked meat flavor);
- colloidal silicon dioxide;
- pigments and others.
The tablets are available in blisters of 10 tablets. A single package may contain 1, 3, or 18 blisters, along with instructions for use.
Some veterinary pharmacies sell tablets individually.
In what cases is it prescribed?
The drug is prescribed by a veterinarian in the following situations:
- Diseases of muscle tissue and the musculoskeletal system, which are accompanied by inflammation, pain and fever.
- Injuries and pathologies of joints (osteoarthritis, osteoarthrosis, osteochondrosis, etc.).
- Presence of tumors.
- Cases of surgical intervention.
- Post-surgery recovery period. Regular use of tablets can significantly speed up the dog's recovery and tissue regeneration.
- Performing dental procedures.
- Bone fracture.
Taking the medicine without a veterinarian's recommendation may aggravate a chronic disease and worsen the pet's condition.
Instructions for use
The tablets are taken once daily (preferably in the morning) at a dosage that depends on the dog's body weight. The table shows the dosage per dose.
| Weight dogs, kg | Dosage 57 mg | Dosage 227 mg |
| 3–5.5 | 1/2 | |
| 5.6-10 | 1 | |
| 10.1–15 | 1.5 | |
| 15.1–22 | 1/2 | |
| 22.1–45 | 1 | |
| 45.1–68 | 1.5 | |
| 68.1–90 | 2 |
These tablets have an appealing smell and taste, so dogs often eat them on their own. Otherwise, we recommend:
- Crush the tablet and mix with food, treats, kefir or water.
- Open your jaws and place the pill on the back of your dog's tongue. Then close your mouth and wait until your dog swallows or the pill dissolves.
The duration of treatment depends on the underlying disease or condition of the animal:
- For osteoarthritis, the duration of therapy is individualized and determined by a veterinarian after a thorough examination. When using Previcox for more than 3 months, regular veterinary examinations are required.
- Inflammatory processes following soft tissue surgery, dental surgery, and postoperative pain relief. In this case, the medication is prescribed 2 hours before surgery, then once every 24 hours for 2-3 days.
It is not recommended to take the medication as prescribed, as this will reduce its effectiveness. If you miss a pill, take it as soon as possible at the prescribed dose.
Side effects and contraindications
Although the drug is safe, Previcox should not be given to dogs in the following cases:
- pregnancy and lactation;
- puppies under 10 weeks of age;
- the dog's weight is less than 3 kg;
- blood diseases (eg, poor clotting);
- acute gastrointestinal diseases;
- hemorrhagic syndrome;
- tendency to bleeding;
- renal and hepatic failure.
Concomitant use of Previcox is prohibited with:
- corticosteroids;
- antibacterial agents;
- other non-steroidal drugs, since it is impossible to calculate a safe dose in such cases.
Rarely (usually if the instructions for use are not followed), a dog may experience the following side effects:
- vomit;
- increased salivation;
- indigestion;
- apathy or depression;
- lack of appetite.
If any adverse effects occur, discontinue use of the tablets. Your dog's condition will improve on its own within 24 hours. Otherwise, consult a veterinarian.
If you notice blood in your dog's stool, persistent vomiting, or noticeable weight loss, a visit to the veterinary clinic should not be delayed.
