Description, composition and mode of action of Bravecto tablets
The active ingredient in Bravecto chewable tablets is fluralaner, a new generation insecticide and acaracide that provides long-lasting protection. After taking just one tablet for 12 weeks, the “poisoning” effect against fleas and ticks will be maintained. Fluralaner is easily absorbed and concentrates in blood plasma. Within the first 12 hours, fleas and ticks already infesting the dog will be killed, and subsequently, the concentration of the active ingredient in the blood will prevent the dog from becoming infected again.
Fluralaner acts on the parasites' nervous system at the molecular level. The substance blocks the impulses responsible for movement, ultimately causing neuronal overexcitation, paralysis, and death of fleas and ticks.
The active substance is effective against several types of parasites:
- fleas Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis;
- ticks Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes hexagonus, Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes holocyclus, Dermacentor reticulatus, Dermacentor variabilis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus.
Chewable tablets are available in five dosages. To choose the appropriate package, you need to know your dog's weight.
Table: the required dose of the drug depending on the dog's weight
| Pet weight, kg | fluralaner dose |
| 2–4.5 | 112.5 mg |
| 4.5–10 | 250 mg |
| 10–20 | 500 mg |
| 20–40 | 1000 mg |
| 40–56 | 1400 mg |
| more than 56 | The combination is selected individually according to the scheme: up to 56 mg of fluralaner per 1 kg of dog weight. In this case, the tablets are not broken, but two suitable ones are selected. |
It's also worth paying attention to the excipients. Bravecto contains:
- flavoring agent;
- sucrose;
- glycerol;
- soybean oil;
- corn starch, etc.

Benefits of tablets
Flea and tick tablets offer several advantages for protecting dogs. First and foremost, they are easy to use and produce rapid results.
- the product in tablet form is suitable for treating kennel-dwelling and aggressive dogs that are difficult to treat with traditional means - drops and sprays;
- Another factor that speaks in favor of tablets is the presence of small children: after taking the tablet, the animal does not need to be isolated;
- Bravecto provides protection for a record 12 weeks (most drops, sprays and tablets provide protection for 4-6 weeks);
- the drug is classified as low-hazard (class 4 according to GOST);
- The tablets reduce the risk of a dog becoming infected with babesiosis because they act quickly on ticks, preventing the infection from being transmitted.
Features of application
Dogs are usually willing to eat Bravecto tablets because they have an attractive smell. It can also be used with food, but you must ensure that your pet has consumed the entire tablet and that there are no broken pieces left in the bowl. Otherwise, the concentration of the substance will be insufficient, and the protective effect of the drug will not be achieved.
One tablet is usually sufficient for peak tick season. Re-application is possible after three months at the same dose.
There's no need to increase the dosage to prolong the medication's effect. The concentration is precisely tailored to the animal's specific weight. The owner simply needs to purchase the correct packaging.
Important usage recommendations:
- Bravecto can be used in the treatment of pregnant and lactating dogs, but under the supervision of a veterinarian;
- It is important not to violate the regimen for taking the drug - a single dose of one tablet with an interval of 12 weeks;
- If you miss a treatment, simply resume taking it as you did at the very beginning of using the drug;
- When treating your dog with Bravecto tablets, follow personal safety rules - be sure to wash your hands with soap after contact with the drug;
- In case of individual hypersensitivity to the substances included in Bravecto, avoid direct contact with the drug;
- The packaging (blister) should be disposed of immediately after use.
Side effects are rare. However, it is important to closely monitor the animal's condition after taking the pill; the following unpleasant symptoms may appear:
- vomit;
- diarrhea;
- loss of appetite;
- salivation.
If the drug enters the body, consult a doctor immediately. If you bring the instructions or packaging for Bravecto with you, specialists will be able to prescribe the necessary treatment more quickly.

Drug safety: reviews from veterinarians and dog owners
Most online reviews support the use of Bravecto tablets. Dog owners are satisfied with the product's long-lasting effects and call Bravecto one of the best tick and flea protection products. The only drawback they cite is the product's price.
When we got a Yorkie puppy, we were very concerned about choosing a tick repellent. After reading reviews, descriptions, etc., and consulting with a veterinarian, I settled on Bravecto. We consciously took all the necessary tests before administering the medication (complete and complete blood count, stool analysis) and 10 days after. There was no significant difference in the results. (Her starch levels increased slightly, but the vet said this was normal and not necessarily due to the pills.) For almost a year, she hasn't had a single infection with piroplasmosis. She tolerates the medication perfectly. There are no side effects. She eats it like a treat. We administer it strictly every 12 weeks. She's very happy and won't be switching.
Our dog is almost four years old; she's a mongrel, a shepherd phenotype. She weighs about 25 kilograms. She's a very active girl with no health problems. We have a lot of ticks at our dacha, and removing them is a long and unpleasant process. Our veterinarian recommended Bravecto, which was new at the time. Our dog eats it without any problems. There are no side effects. None. And the most important thing is the results. We rarely see ticks on our dog. Sometimes they even slightly attach themselves, but then they fall off on their own and crawl around half-dead. Catching them is no problem. I must say, this is a huge relief; compared to aerosols and other treatments, everything is much simpler. I recommend this product. However, it's important to remember that it's poison, and if your pet is not entirely healthy or is old, it's best to consult a veterinarian.
Along with positive reviews, there are extremely negative ones, which claim the tablets are harmful, including deaths in pets after taking them. Some blogs also spread information about the drug's dangers. Of course, no product guarantees a positive result. Furthermore, like any other chemical drug, Bravecto tablets can cause an individual reaction in each animal. When choosing a product, it is always better to consult a specialist.
The pill didn't work for my Jack Russell! The tick still gave us paraplasmosis, and the pill damaged his liver and gallbladder. The vet says the chances are 50/50. I deeply regret giving this pill to my darling; I wanted the best! I won't discourage anyone, but PLEASE consult a vet!!! Don't ruin your dogs!!!!
The dog was poisoned by this medication! The parents gave in to the vet's persuasion to give the dog this pill, who insisted it was harmless (the dog was already elderly with kidney and liver problems). The effect appeared within 2 hours! The dog started vomiting, and she was ill! And for a month now, the dog has been barely eating and feeling ill, and the doctors don't really know what to do! They say it SHOULD go away when the medication wears off (3 months!!!)! Take care of your furry friends; don't give these medications to small, weak, or sick animals!!!
What experts say about Bravecto
Veterinary products undergo extensive testing before they reach the market. A study of dogs' reactions to a deliberately increased (5-fold!) dose of Bravecto showed:
- the use of fluralaner did not cause any negative reactions in dogs even at a significantly higher dose (up to 281.3 mg/kg);
- At the recommended dose (56 mg/kg), the drug is well tolerated by dogs, meaning it has an almost fivefold reserve.
The drug is truly interesting, and I evaluated its effectiveness in a real-world setting last year on my canine patients and my own Giant Schnauzers. The only isolated problems encountered while administering Bravecto were self-limiting diarrhea in an English Bulldog and a single episode of vomiting in a Husky. No cases of piroplasmosis were observed during the entire 12-week period of fluralaner use. The tablets are highly palatable. The drug is also convenient for treating flea allergy dermatitis and demodicosis in dogs. This eliminates the need for owners to administer the drug orally daily for demodicosis treatment, which can last for 3-5 months.
Intervet LLC www.bravovets.ru www.msd-animal-health.ru If dogs are treated, the drug is also prescribed for flea control. Previously, diagnosis of flea allergy dermatitis required a course of treatment. With the advent of BRAVECTO, diagnosis of this type of allergy has become simpler for both owners and veterinarians, requiring a single dose of the drug for all dogs in the household. Owners of affected animals no longer need to follow complicated instructions. And veterinary dermatologists no longer have to doubt whether owners are following the prescribed treatment correctly or whether their animals are regularly treated for fleas. Treatment of demodicosis is now quite straightforward in most cases. Almost all of my patients diagnosed with juvenile generalized demodicosis and adult demodicosis in dogs have been cured with just one BRAVECTO tablet during the course of treatment. This drug can also be used to prevent recurrence of demodicosis in those who have recovered from this condition. This is especially true when prescribing immunosuppressant medications. I also actively prescribe BRAVECTO for the prevention of vector-borne diseases. Now, to protect a dog from ticks, an owner only needs to administer the medication once every three months.
I first used Bravecto in my practice a year and a half ago. Since then, it has become a staple in my arsenal of medications for the treatment and prevention of insect-borne diseases and dermatological problems (for example, scabies). Fluralaner, the active ingredient in Bravecto, has proven so effective that not a single client I've recommended it to has returned to the clinic with any ailments.
Bravecto tablets offer several advantages over other antiparasitic medications. However, when choosing a flea and tick treatment, it's important to consider your dog's overall health. To avoid unpleasant side effects from using Bravecto, it's best to consult a veterinarian.
