Enroxil for dogs: instructions for use of solution and tablets, analogues

Treating infectious diseases in animals requires the use of antibacterial drugs. One such medication is Enroxil for dogs. The instructions for its use describe the characteristics of the available forms—injectable solution and tablets—as well as the intended use, contraindications, side effects, and dosage. A review of the main alternatives is also provided.

Enroxil is a veterinary antibacterial agent of the fluoroquinolone class. It is manufactured by KRKA, Slovenia.

For dogs, there are the following forms:

  • injection solution (d/i);
  • Meat-flavored tablets.

The tablets are slightly biconvex, round, scored, and have a beveled edge. They are light brown in color, with light or dark inclusions. The active ingredient is enrofloxacin. The following dosage forms are available depending on the content: 15, 50, and 150 mg.

Minor elements:

  • silicon dioxide;
  • sodium lauryl sulfate;
  • flavoring agent;
  • magnesium stearate;
  • starch;
  • sodium croscarmellose;
  • mannitol;
  • talc;
  • dibutyl sebacate;
  • sodium starch glycolate;
  • methacrylic acid copolymer.

The tablets are packed in blisters of 10 pieces. Shelf life: 3 years. Temperature: 0–25 °C.

Properties

The drug's therapeutic effect is due to the active ingredient, enrofloxacin. This component has an antibacterial effect, acting against bacteria that cause respiratory mycoplasmosis (bronchitis, pneumonia, tracheitis, pharyngitis). Enrofloxacin is absorbed and penetrates many organs of the dog.

Enroxil solution for injections is classified as Class 3 (moderately hazardous) based on its impact on the body. Tablets are classified as Category 4 (low hazard).

Purpose

Enroxil's indications depend on the dosage form and are listed in the manufacturer's official instructions. The solution is prescribed for dogs to treat the following infectious diseases:

  • salmonellosis (intestinal infection);
  • sepsis (an inflammatory reaction with infection of the blood by microbes);
  • colibacillosis (an intestinal bacterial disease);
  • atrophic rhinitis;
  • bacterial pneumonia;
  • respiratory organs;
  • genitourinary system;
  • Gastrointestinal tract.

Meat-flavored tablets are prescribed for infections of soft tissues, the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, the genitourinary organs, and otitis.

Contraindications

There are general restrictions on use for tablets and solution:

  • intolerance to fluoroquinolones;
  • abnormal development of cartilage tissue;
  • lesions of the central nervous system, accompanied by convulsions.

The injection solution is also contraindicated in kidney and liver pathologies.

Preparation Do not use for large breed puppies under 1.5 years of age, and for others under one year of age.

Special instructions

According to the annotation to the drug, both forms of Enroxil are not recommended for use at the same time as macrolide and tetracycline antibiotics, as well as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, chloramphenicol and theophylline.

Meat-flavored tablets should also not be taken with medications containing aluminum, iron, magnesium, or calcium due to decreased absorption of the medications.

No specific studies have been conducted on the use of enrofloxacin in pregnant females or during lactation. The use of this medication should be decided by a veterinarian, individually for each animal, taking into account the potential risk.

Working with the medication requires adherence to safety precautions and personal hygiene. If the product comes into contact with skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water.

If you experience any allergic symptoms or if Enroxil accidentally enters your body, consult a doctor immediately, having the drug label or instructions for use with you.

People sensitive to fluoroquinolones should not come into contact with the drug.

The packaging of the drug is prohibited from being used for household purposes and should be thrown away with the trash.

Instructions for use

The medicine is used in compliance with the rules for the use of veterinary antibacterial agents specified in the annotation.

Before starting treatment, it is recommended to test the pathogen's susceptibility to enrofloxacin. Fluoroquinolones are considered reserve antibiotics and are used when other antibacterial drugs are ineffective.

The method of administration of medications in solution and tablets is different.

In the form of a solution

The injection, according to the medication instructions, is administered subcutaneously once every 24 hours. The dosage is 1 ml/10 kg or 5 mg/kg of the dog's body weight. The treatment duration is 5 days, but may be extended to 10 days if indicated.

Important! To prevent pain, it is recommended to administer a 5% Enroxil solution to a single site in large dogs at a dose not exceeding 5 ml, and to administer it to small breeds at a dose not exceeding 2.5 ml.

Pills

Crush before use. Mix the tablet into the animal's food or force-feed it to the back of the tongue. The daily dose is 5 mg/kg of body weight.

Calculating the daily dosage of meat-flavored tablets: table depending on the type

Tablet type (mg enrofloxacin) Weight of 1 tablet, g Number of kg of dog's weight per 1 tablet
150.0553
500.18310
1500.55030

The daily dose of the drug can be taken in 2 doses.

The duration of therapy, depending on the complexity of the disease, ranges from 5 to 10 days and is determined by a veterinarian.

No unexpected symptoms were observed when using the injection or tablet for the first time or when discontinuing it.

To prevent a decrease in the medication's effectiveness, it is recommended not to skip doses of Enroxil. If a dose is missed, subsequent doses are resumed according to the same schedule and at the same dosage.

Associated phenomena

1552293383_5c861e04148e7.jpg

When used according to the manufacturer's instructions, these medications do not cause complications or side effects. If allergic symptoms occur, discontinue use and use symptomatic treatments.

Using the injection solution may cause temporary gastrointestinal disturbances. Irritation may occur, but this resolves spontaneously.

Taking the tablets may cause:

  • increased frequency of urination;
  • softening of feces;
  • vomiting.

These symptoms quickly pass and do not require discontinuing the medication.

Consumption of meat-flavored tablets by dogs can also lead to decreased appetite, nervous disorders, and depression. In such cases, symptomatic treatment is used.

Analogues

If Enroxil is unavailable, direct analogues of the drug can be used. These include antibacterial drugs from the fluoroquinolone group, which have the same active ingredient, enrofloxacin, and similar indications.

Enromag

A single dose is 1.5–2 ml/10 kg of dog weight. Apply once daily for 3 to 5 days.

Contraindications, side effects, and special instructions are the same. The solution is not used by pregnant or lactating females.

Enrofloxacin

A clear, light-yellow solution. The active ingredient is enrofloxacin. The indications, contraindications, and side effects are the same as those for Enroxil. An additional indication is the treatment of secondary viral infections.

Enrosol

1551891371_5c7ffba87403b.jpg

The dosage form is a 5% solution. The active ingredient is enrofloxacin. Secondary ingredients are potassium hydroxide, glycerin, water, and trilon. It is indicated for infectious diseases with pathogens sensitive to fluoroquinolones. Dogs are administered subcutaneously. The dosage is 1 ml per 10 kg of dog weight. Duration of therapy: 3–5 days.
