Pomsky: breed description and basic care guidelines

The Pomsky is a hybrid of a Husky and a Pomeranian that will captivate any dog owner. These affectionate pets make wonderful family members and loyal friends. Each Pomsky is unique, as crossbreeding always produces different puppies. The breed is considered new and unstable, as selective breeding is still underway. These dogs are less demanding in terms of grooming than Spitz dogs, making them ideal for beginning dog owners.

Brief description

The young Pomsky breed still does not have defined standards and is therefore not officially registered. Twenty years ago, crossbreeding huskies with other breeds began in America. The first litter was successful, and rumors of the new breed quickly spread throughout America.

After some time, the Pomsky was transported to England, then to the CIS. The International Cynological Association still hasn't recognized this breed, so breeding is currently frozen.

The Pomsky does not have an official standard, but they can be identified by several characteristics depending on the type of dog.

Personality traits

This is a friendly breed that is not likely to harm adults or children. They have a moderate temperament, are completely calm, and do not show aggression toward people or other animals.

These dogs are not shy and enjoy playing and being active. They cope well with extended periods of solitude. They are suitable for both large families with children and single people.

Pomskies are very attached to their owners, but are different from Spitz dogs in their independence. A puppy's temperament is determined not only by genetics but also by its environment.

Pros and cons

The breed has its advantages and disadvantages.

Main advantages:

  • high intelligence;
  • friendliness;
  • calmness;
  • lack of aggression;
  • independence.

Flaws:

  • unspecified standard;
  • lack of information about possible diseases;
  • increased activity.

The average lifespan of dogs is 12-15 years with proper care.

Care and maintenance

Hybrids are less demanding in terms of grooming than Spitz dogs, but they do require special attention. Without proper care, a Pomsky can become ill.

They are very clean animals that take care of their own fur, like cats.

Feeding

You can feed your pet commercially prepared food or homemade one. The most important thing is that your dog's diet is balanced. Commercially prepared food should be premium, such as Royal Canin, Hill's, and Perfect Fit. Dry food should be combined with wet food. Your pet should always have access to fresh water.

Leftover food should be removed from the bowl, as it may spoil and cause harm to health.

You can add the following to your Pomsky's diet:

  • raw lean meat;
  • boiled boneless sea fish;
  • boiled vegetables;
  • buckwheat;
  • liver;
  • liver;
  • eggs;
  • low-fat cottage cheese.

It is necessary to exclude from the diet:

  • smoked meats;
  • salty;
  • sweet;
  • flour.

Natural food will help add variety to your pet's diet. With this type of diet, it's necessary to give your dog preventative vitamin supplements once or twice a year, which can be purchased at a veterinary pharmacy.

The animal should be fed 2-3 times a day in small portions.

Grooming

Pomskies are fairly clean dogs, so they don't require frequent bathing. Washing them once a month with a special shampoo is sufficient.

Animals shed their undercoat once or twice a year. During this time, the coat can be uncomfortable for owners. To reduce shedding, brush your dog daily with a special brush with natural bristles. Once the shedding period has ended, brushing is no longer necessary. Grooming once or twice a year is sufficient.

Your pet's nails need to be trimmed about once a month. You can do this yourself with a nail clipper or take them to a dog groomer.

Education and training

Pomskies are highly intelligent and highly trainable. These small dogs are capable of performing a variety of tricks and understand their owners at a glance.

You can train your pet yourself or take it to a dog training course. A puppy is ready for training as early as six months old. Basic commands are learned within a couple of sessions. The dog dislikes harshness and yelling and is very sensitive to its owner's emotional state.

If trained harshly, your pet may become offended and uncontrollable and aggressive.

Diseases and treatment

Since the breed is a hybrid, puppies rarely inherit genetic diseases from their ancestors. Health information about the breed is not officially recorded. Scientists note that some puppies suffer from allergic reactions.

To prevent allergies, it's important to feed your pet properly and avoid using cosmetics not intended for dogs. Pomskies suffer from tartar buildup, so special attention to oral health is required. You can give them special cleaning bones and biscuits, and brush their teeth once or twice a week.

Scheduled vaccinations and regular treatment against parasites (worms, fleas) will help keep your animal healthy.

Breeding

To breed a Pomsky, all you need is a healthy Spitz male and a healthy Husky female. The most important thing when choosing partners is the absence of genetic diseases and defects.

It's possible to mix two individuals of the same species, but such a mating is only permitted in kennels staffed by experienced breeders. The difficulty with this type of crossbreeding is that the genetic makeup of the litter is unpredictable. While one mating produces beautiful Pomskies, subsequent puppies may be completely different from the first litter. They may have more husky or spitz-like traits.

Knitting

The mating process is unique due to the difference in height between the male and female dogs. A Spitz dog cannot naturally impregnate a husky, so specialists must resort to artificial insemination. The female dog is injected with the male dog's sperm using a special syringe at a specific time during her estrus cycle.

It is prohibited to breed a female Spitz and a male Husky, as the small dog will not be able to bear large puppies. This will result in the death of the animal.

Caring for puppies

During the first few days after birth, puppies require special care from the mother and breeder. The owner must ensure comfortable conditions for the mother and puppies, and provide the mother with adequate nutrition to support the puppies' natural feeding.

Once the babies grow up and begin to move around independently, they should be placed in a special enclosure to ensure their safety. During this time, the owner should provide them with complementary foods, such as low-fat cottage cheese and kefir.

By three months, the puppies will be socially adapted and transitioned to adult food. At this age, the sale of the offspring begins.

How to name a puppy

Anyone who falls in love with these adorable little dogs will inevitably wonder how much a Pomsky puppy costs. Prices range from $2,500 to $5,000. You should only buy a dog from a reputable breeder. Before purchasing, ask for information about the parents, vaccinations, and the breeder's living conditions.

After acquiring a new family member, all that remains is to choose a nickname.

Boys can be called:

  • Archie;
  • Bengo;
  • Wentz;
  • Bismuth;
  • Gary;
  • Green;
  • Day;
  • Rem;
  • Rex;
  • Sherlock;
  • Kevin;
  • Frame.

The following names are suitable for girls:

  • Khasya;
  • Agatha;
  • Asya;
  • Jade;
  • Basya;
  • Bonya;
  • Coco;
  • Gunya;
  • Donka.

High-quality Pomskies can't be cheap. If a breeder sells puppies for too little, they're either defective or not related to a husky-Pomeranian hybrid.

Pomskies are playful little dogs the size of a Spitz with the appearance of a husky. They are perfect for indoor living and will be loved by everyone in the family. These intelligent little dogs will support their owners in both leisure and active pursuits.
