Investigators from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have busted an underground dog fighting ring. All dogs have been taken to a shelter.
In Kansas, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) have shut down an illegal dog fighting ring.
The staff managed to rescue 45 dogs from filthy cages. Among them were puppies. Half of the dogs were chained outside. The other half were locked in a small room. They were kept in poor conditions. All the animals suffered from hunger and thirst, as they had no food or water. Many of the dogs had bite wounds and scars from being forced to fight other dogs, often resulting in serious injuries and even death. Young puppies were being trained to replace the dead fighters.
Animal rights activists say that if the animal remained alive after the fight, it could only rely on its own strength and luck to survive, since no veterinary care was provided.
According to ASPCA Director Joel Lopez, dog fighting is all about money. No one cares about the animals themselves. The underground dog fighting ring was shut down after animal rights activists found a dog with serious injuries caused by fighting. The building where the dog fights took place and the dogs themselves were soon discovered.
All the animals found were transferred to a shelter, the location of which remains secret. Only two suspects have been detained in this case.
The dogs are very frightened and stressed. Shelter staff will do everything possible to restore their mental health. The puppies have the best chance of finding a new home. They haven't been involved in fights, so their mental health is normal. However, shelter staff hope that all the dogs will find caring and loving homes.
