Cats stick out the tip of their tongue: the main reasons

Many owners of adorable furry pets observe a strange phenomenon: cats often stick out the tip of their tongue. Should you be concerned when this happens too often? There can be a variety of reasons for this phenomenon.

Common forgetfulness when relaxed

This tongue position can often be seen when the pet is asleep.

Often, at the end of washing, cats simply forget to put their tongue back, like small children or people sitting thoughtfully. This usually occurs in a relaxed state, when the cat does not control the muscles of the face, as a result of which the tongue can fall out on its own.

Problems with bite and dental condition

Typically, breeds that have bite problems have a flattened muzzle.

Specific characteristics of a cat breed may include a forward-protruding jaw. In a normal dog's condition, the teeth don't hold the tongue in place, and it protrudes involuntarily. If this condition causes discomfort, the bite should be treated by a veterinarian.

A protruding tongue can indicate the development of stomatitis and mouth ulcers. When the tongue is open, the air has a cooling effect and soothes irritation.

Thermoregulation

In cats, as in dogs, the tongue is an important element of the thermoregulatory system.

When the ambient temperature rises, the tongue helps to reduce body temperature and protect against overheating. If tongue protrusion is accompanied by heavy breathing and signs of heatstroke, you should help the cat find a cool place during hot weather and give the pet clean, cool water to drink.

There are several reasons why a cat might stick out the tip of its tongue. Most of them are harmless, but occasionally this symptom indicates overheating.
