 How to properly brush a Pomeranian

It is enough to comb the dog 1-Twice a week. Daily brushing can damage the undercoat and lead to hair loss. For grooming, use a fine-toothed comb, preferably made of natural materials. Metal slicker brushes are painful, scratch the skin, and damage the fur.

Brush your pet in the direction of hair growth, after moistening the coat. You can use a special spray to improve the condition of the coat and help detangle tangles.

Spitz shed heavily in the spring and fall, and even more frequently if the apartment has dry, hot air. During this period, the dog needs to be brushed daily to remove dead hair. During this shedding period, Spitz dogs can lose up to 80% of their coat. If hair loss is intense and regrowth is slow, supplementing with vitamins is recommended. Severe hair loss accompanied by itching and flaking indicates one of the following problems:

  •         skin disease;
  •         parasites;
  •         fungus.

In this case, you need to contact a veterinarian.

It's not recommended to trim a Spitz's coat short; you can only trim away mats. The thick fur serves a thermoregulatory function, and trimming it is detrimental to the dog's health.

 Bathing a Spitz

Spitz are naturally clean. They avoid puddles and mud, so after a walk, simply washing their paws is sufficient. When walking in bad weather, you can dress your dog in special clothing to minimize the amount of dirt on their fur. A Spitz should be bathed once every 1.5 days.-2 months. For washing, use special products for dogs with long, medium-hard hair.

The Spitz's fluffy appearance comes from its dense undercoat of short hairs. Frequent washing damages these hairs, causing the coat to lose its fluff. After washing, a conditioner or balm is essential. It softens the coat and prevents tangling and matting. After washing, the dog should be thoroughly dried with a hair dryer. Due to its dense coat, it takes a long time to dry naturally, which can lead to fungus growth. For white dogs, a shampoo containing bleach is used.

It's best to bathe your Spitz after an evening walk. Dogs can catch a cold if they go outside after bathing. Before washing, cover their ears with cotton wool to prevent water from getting in.

Between baths, you can use a special dry shampoo to clean the coat. It contains talc, which absorbs dust and dirt. Apply the product to the coat and then comb it out with a soft comb.

 Parasite treatment

Even with meticulous grooming, a dog can still pick up fleas while out for a walk or through contact with other animals. Because of the Spitz's thick coat, skin parasites are difficult to detect. Regular flea and tick treatments applied to the withers or a special collar are recommended.

The Spitz is a challenging dog to maintain, requiring attention and proper care. Damaged fur is difficult to restore. With proper care, your pet's coat will always be beautiful, thick, and shiny.
