A cyclist found an abandoned baby raccoon while out for a ride. The animal was taken to a wildlife shelter.
A few days ago, retired police sergeant Dave Ferrell was out for a bike ride in a park in Tallahassee, Florida, when he heard a plaintive squeak. He immediately stopped and spotted a small raccoon.
Ferrell wrote on his Facebook page that the animal was lying on the bike path and he almost ran over it.
The animal was nearly dead. The cyclist was worried that the little one could soon die without the necessary help. So Dave placed the injured animal in a backpack to transport it to a veterinary clinic.
On his way back, as he was leaving the park, he luckily encountered a police officer. The injured child was handed over to him.
A police officer took the cub to St. Francis Wildlife Rescue, where Emily Shaw took care of the raccoon. Emily says the animal arrived at the shelter covered in fly eggs. If they hadn't been found in time, the eggs would have hatched into larvae, which would have eaten the raccoon alive. At the shelter, all the insects were removed from the raccoon, it was washed, and it was given milk.
The baby now has every chance of recovering. He is well fed and receiving the necessary care.
