Release forms and composition
Marfloxacin is a veterinary antibacterial agent of the fluoroquinolone group. Manufactured by KRKA, Slovenia.
For cats, the drug is available in the following forms:
- Injection solution 2%. Transparent, from yellow-green to yellow-brown hue.
- Tablets 5 mg. The shape is round, biconvex, and has a notch on one side. The color is yellow-brown. White or dark inclusions may be present.
The main active ingredient is marbofloxacin.

Storage conditions
Marfloxacin solution for cats is recommended to be stored at a temperature of +5 to +25°C (41 to 77°F) in its original packaging, unopened. Keep out of reach of children and away from direct sunlight. Do not allow to freeze. Shelf life: 3 years. An opened bottle should not be used after 28 days.
Store tablets in their original packaging, away from feed and other food products. Store between 0 and 25°C. Shelf life: 3 years.
Properties
The therapeutic effect of the drug is due to the activity of the main substance - marbofloxacin, which has a bactericidal effect. Marbofloxacin is used against microorganisms by inhibiting bacterial enzymes.
After injection or oral administration of Marbofloxacin, the active ingredient is absorbed, penetrating most of the cat's internal organs. Bioavailability reaches nearly 100%. Marbofloxacin binds to plasma proteins by 10%. The half-life of the injectable drug is 13 hours, while the tablet half-life is 10 hours. It is excreted in feces and urine.
In terms of its impact on the cat's body, Marfloxacin is a low-hazard substance.
Indications
The medication's intended use for cats depends on the dosage form and is provided in the manufacturer's official instructions. Marfloxacin injections are indicated for the treatment of abscesses and infected wounds, as well as their prevention during surgery.
The tablets are prescribed for bacterial and mycoplasma infections:
- genitourinary system;
- respiratory organs;
- soft tissues;
- skin;
- early.
Contraindications
Contraindications vary depending on the form of the drug.
General restrictions: individual sensitivity to the components and concomitant use with tetracyclines and macrolides, as well as chloramphenicol.
Injection solution
According to the drug's annotation, Marfloxacin is not recommended for use in cats in cases of damage to the central nervous system or resistance of the infectious agent to other fluoroquinolones.
The possibility of using injections in pregnant cats and during lactation is determined by a veterinarian based on the balance between the potential risks and benefits of the drug.
Pills
Contraindicated in the following cases:
- pathologies of cartilaginous tissue development;
- CNS diseases manifested by seizures;
- pregnancy and lactation;
- kittens up to 4 months old.
It is not recommended to take the tablets simultaneously with drugs containing aluminum, iron, magnesium and calcium.
Special instructions

Instructions for use of the solution
According to the official instructions, Marfloxacin injections for the treatment of wound infections and abscesses in cats are administered subcutaneously once daily. The dosage is 2 mg (0.1 ml) per 1 kg of body weight. The course of treatment is 3–5 days.
To prevent wound infection during surgery, the drug is administered intravenously once immediately after surgery. Dose: 2 mg/kg.
Using tablets
Marfloxacin tablets are crushed and added to food or administered forcefully to the back of the tongue before use. Dosage is once daily. Dosage: 2 mg of marbofloxacin per 1 kg of cat’s weight. The duration of the course of therapy is 3–10 days, depending on the problem.
When using medications for the first time or when discontinuing them, no special manifestations are observed.
It is not advisable to skip taking the medication to avoid reducing the treatment effect.
Side effects
When used according to the instructions, the medication does not cause complications or side effects. An overdose of the injection solution may cause nervous system dysfunction and bradycardia symptoms. Inflammation at the injection site is possible after the injection.
The use of tablets may provoke:
- frequent bowel movements;
- softening of stool;
- vomiting.
Such phenomena disappear during treatment and do not require discontinuation of the medication. If allergic reactions occur, stop taking the drug and use symptomatic and antihistamine medications.
