Why does a dog's stomach rumble, and what can you do about it?

If a dog periodically experiences abdominal rumbling, it can be due to a variety of reasons. Sometimes, this symptom indicates underlying medical conditions. To address the problem promptly, an attentive owner should understand why their dog's stomach is rumbling.

Main reasons

The dog sniffs the food

Sometimes pet dogs secretly steal their owners' food, which is not at all suitable for the pets.

The reasons for rumbling can be both harmless and very serious, for example:

  • Dietary errors. Unsuitable foods for dogs can cause digestive problems and rumbling in the stomach. This can happen when dogs are given spicy, sweet, fatty, or fried foods. Raw vegetables, such as cucumbers and cabbage, can also cause rumbling. Sometimes the gastrointestinal tract reacts differently to new, unfamiliar foods in the animal's diet or to the transition from kibble to natural food.
  • Swallowing air. This happens when a pet eats greedily and swallows in chunks. Gases form in the intestines, leading to bloating and rumbling.
  • Poisoning. When, in addition to sounds behind the peritoneum, there are disorders in the form of vomiting and loose stools, it may be a sign of exposure to toxic substances.
  • Intestinal infections. These include not only bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract, but also helminths. In these cases, abdominal rumbling is accompanied by a fever, diarrhea, refusal to eat or drink, decreased activity, and other health problems.
  • Allergy. If the body is prone to such reactions, they can be caused by various irritants, including food. Such dogs often have allergies to chicken and eggs, as well as fish and milk.
  • Non-infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract - hereditary or acquired. In the second case, they are often a consequence of dysfunction of other organs and can become chronic. To prolong remission and reduce flare-up symptoms, it is necessary to feed the dog according to the veterinarian's recommendations.

A veterinarian can determine the exact cause of your pet's rumbling stomach, unless it's due to a poor diet, based on diagnostic results.

What to do

Dog at the vet

Prolonged rumbling or the presence of any additional symptoms is a serious reason to visit a veterinarian.

To help your four-legged friend, you need to:

  • normalize the dog's diet and feed the dog at regular intervals;
  • exclude foods that cause indigestion and increased intestinal gas formation;
  • Take your animal to a veterinary clinic if you notice any signs of deteriorating health.

You should not try to treat your dog yourself without an examination and medical prescription.

A dog's stomach growling is harmless if it occurs infrequently and isn't accompanied by any health issues. Otherwise, it's a compelling reason to visit a vet.
